1. How does Knowio work for utilities infrastructure?
Knowio offers remote access control and monitoring for utility sites, including substations, pumping stations, water treatment facilities and energy infrastructure. Operators can remotely control gates and padlocks, grant contractor access and receive instant alerts without requiring staff to be permanently on-site.
2. Can Knowio control access to unmanned utility sites?
Yes. Knowio is designed for unmanned and remotely managed sites. Access can be granted, changed or revoked remotely at any time using the Knowio App or Portal, and all access activity is automatically logged.
3. Can Knowio send an alert when a utility site gate is opened unexpectedly?
Yes. Knowio can recognise an unauthorised gate or padlock event and send an immediate alert. If a gate is opened without the Smart Padlock being unlocked, the BLE Contact Sensor can detect the mismatch and send a notification.
4. Can Knowio be used at remote utility sites without mains power or Wi-Fi?
Yes. AccessIQ uses battery-powered hardware and LTE cellular connectivity, so no mains power, Wi-Fi or fixed internet connection is required. At off-grid sites, an optional solar panel can keep the Gateway charged.
5. How does Knowio handle contractor access at utility sites?
Contractors can be issued one-time passcodes for specific access windows. Each passcode expires after use or at the end of its defined access period, preventing contractors from retaining access.
6. Does Knowio integrate with CCTV monitoring at utility sites?
Yes. Knowio integrates with Hikvision, Dahua, Ajax, Davantis and Ganz AI Box for automatic CCTV arming and disarming. CCTV can be programmed to arm when a site is secured and disarm when authorised access is detected.
7. Can Knowio manage multiple utility sites from a single dashboard?
Yes. Through the Knowio Portal, operators can manage access, users and monitoring across multiple sites at the same time. Permissions and alerts can be configured independently for each site.
8. Is Knowio hardware suitable for outdoor utility environments?
Yes. The Knowio Smart Padlock and sensors are IP68-rated and designed for demanding outdoor conditions at substations, water facilities and other energy or utility sites.
9. Can Knowio limit utility site access to authorised personnel only?
Yes. Users are assigned individual access permissions, so only authorised engineers or operators can open particular gates or padlocks. Access can also be restricted to specific times, such as scheduled maintenance periods.
10. Can Knowio provide a verifiable audit trail for utility site access?
Yes. Each access event is timestamped and associated with a specific user. This gives utility operators a complete record of who accessed each site and when, supporting regulatory compliance and security incident investigations.
11. Can Knowio identify a forced-open gate at a utility site?
Yes. Knowio combines the BLE Contact Sensor, which detects physical open and closed status, with the Smart Padlock, which reports locked and unlocked status. If a gate opens without an authorised padlock event, Knowio can identify the mismatch and immediately raise an alert.
12. What connectivity does Knowio use at utility sites without fixed internet?
The Knowio Gateway uses LTE Cat-M as its primary connection, GPRS as a fallback and NB-IoT as a secondary connection, helping provide connectivity in locations with limited or inconsistent mobile coverage.
