FAQs
How do I know if a smart lock is in range?
When a padlock is in range, the padlock icon on the output the padlock is assgined to will light up bright yellow on the app.
If there is a padlock in front of me and I dont know which one it is in my app, what do I?
Open the app, and the bottom of the home page there is a green button with a padlock icon in it. Tap this, then press a button on the padlock and it will tell you which site it is on on your app. If you don't have access, it will tell you the name of the site so you can request access from a manager.
I have the lock in front of me and the app open, but the padlock icon is dull. What is wrong?
Double check that you have Bluetooth activated on your phone and the app has been given relevant permissions to use it, otherwise the app cannot communicate with the lock in question.
Can I move padlocks and keyboxes from site to site within the app?
Yes, you can unlink a padlock/keybox from one site within the devices section within a site. Simply tap the delete button on the device that you want to move and it will be removed from the site in question. Then go to the site that you want to add it to, again go to devices and now add it to that site by clicking the add button on the top right corner. Select padlock or keybox from the list, then select the output you want to add it to (you can change the name after (see two questions down) and when prompted press the button on the padlock. A video is available on the app section of the support page that demonstrates how to do this.
Can I change the name of a padlock/keybox when its located in a site?
Yes, you can do this by clicking on the pencil on the top right corner of a site page, select the output in question (1-4, which may already be renamed) and then tap on the name field and change it accordingly. Please note that this will change the name of the site padlock/keybox for all users. A video is available on the app section of the support page that demonstrates how to do this.
Can I change the name of a site that I have access to?
Yes, you can change the name of the site so that you can refer it to as you want to. This will not change the name of the site for any other users, but will mean that when you share access to that site, the name you gave it will be used for the new user. They in turn can change it too once they have access. To change the site name, simply tap on the pencil on the sites overview screen. Then select the site you want to change the name of, and then tap rename. A video is available on the app section of the support page that demonstrates how to do this.
How do I identify which device is a padlock and what is a keybox in the app?
If you go to devices within a site in particular, you will note a long code under the words Smart Lock. If this code starts with SP2E that is a padlock and if it begins with IGK3, it is a keybox. The words in yellow clarify the name of that device in the site itself.
What is the keypad for on the padlocks and keyboxes?
It is possible to generate access codes for the keypads on the Knowio smart padlocks and key boxes, which means that they can be opened without the Knowio app. This is ideal for either temporary visitors or employees or regular visitors that do not have a smart phone. A number of different access codes can be created: - One Time Passcode, which lasts for 24 hours before expiring and can be used just once - Permanent Passcodes, which last until deleted (See below) - Duration Passcodes, which can be used from a chosen date in the future until a decided upon expiry date - Weekly, which can be used to give access during specific times on certain days of the week.
How I generate access codes for padlocks and keyboxes?
Access codes are generated in the access section of the app, accessed from the bottom menu bar. Once in it, tap on the + button on the top right corner of the app, then choose “Generate lock access code”. Pick the lock that you want to give access to, if more than two of them are in the site in question. Enter the person’s first and second name, then chose if you want the code to be auto generated, or if you want to create a custom pin. Important - If you want to create a custom code, the phone must be in the vicinity of the lock in order to communicate this new code to the lock. Then choose which code type you want – i.e. One Time Pin, Permanent Pin, Duration Pin or Weekly Pin. Press Generate access, which will create the access code, which can then be shared via text message, or WhatsApp etc, or copy it to you clipboard. Important note – you must be connected to the internet in order to generate access codes.
Can I create my own or get access code users to choose their own codes?
Yes, as per the above, you can do this, but you must be in vicinity of the lock in question in order to allow the phone to send that new code to the lock via Bluetooth.
Can I delete access codes for padlocks and keyboxes?
A code user has forgotten their code, how can I find out what it is?
Same process as above can be used. You do not need to be near the padlock to get access to this code.
Is there a master pin for a padlock/keybox? Where do I find it.
Yes there is. In terms of its location, see the third image from the left above. Please be aware that this Pin cannot be changed and so should not be given out to anyone that is not an administrator.
Are there limits on the amount of pins that can be generated in an hour?
You can create 5 unique auto pins per hour. There is no limit to the amount of custom pins that you can generate.
How many auto pins can be generated and be available for use at any given time?
199 auto pin codes can be generated and be “active and ready to be used” at any given time. If you generate a 200th auto pin, it will automatically expire the auto pin with the closest expiration date.
How long does a One Time Passcode (OTP) last/expire?
An OTP lasts for 24 hours before it auto-expires. A permanent pin must be used within 24 hours of its creation in order to be activated.
Can opening a padlock with a passcode make a “rule” work, such as auto-disarming cameras on a monitored CCTV system?
A passcode can only make a rule work if a Knowio Gateway is in the vicinity of the padlock. See below for more information.
Will i know if a padlock is not properly closed?
Yes, if a Knowio Gateway is in the vicinity of the padlock. See below for more information.
Will I get a notification in real-time when an access code is used?
As per the above, only if a Gateway is in use, and if a gateway is in use, you only know that the padlock was opened, not who opened it. Who opened it will be stored in the lock itself, and this will be uploaded the next time someone opens the lock via the app.
Will I get a notification in real-time when an access code is created?
Not currently, this is an option that is on our road map. You can though go to the logs at any time, and see up-to-date data as to when an access code is created and who created it.
How many offline events can be stored on the lock before it runs out of memory?
The locks can store 299 offline openings in its memory. So, for example, if you have 10 people per day opening the locks only with pins, and no one with the app, then its important that someone goes to the lock once a month and opens it in order to download these logs and get them into the system.
How long are logs stored on the app for?
Generally these are stored for a minimum of 30 days, but sometimes longer.
